Award-winning design studio 4SPACE has officially completed its latest architectural project, Falwa, located within the prestigious ADREA — Abu Dhabi Royal Equestrian Arts.
Created for Michelin-starred Emirati Chef Faisal Alharmoodi, Falwa is a contemporary dining destination that seamlessly connects two evolving expressions of Emirati identity: a new generation of local culinary arts and the UAE’s deep-rooted relationship with the horse.
Rather than relying on literal heritage motifs or reproducing familiar cultural symbols, 4SPACE translates these historical and cultural references into a contemporary architectural language expressed through form, movement, colour, material and detail.
For design, architecture, hospitality and lifestyle audiences, the project unfolds through several distinct narratives, each revealing a different dimension of its spatial and cultural philosophy.
Anatomy of Space: Translating Muscular Grace into Built Form
The architectural narrative begins with the name Falwa, an Arabic term referring to a young female mare after weaning and entering her first year. The name carries cultural associations of grace, beauty, youth and freedom of movement.
Within the context of ADREA, this became the defining starting point for the spatial concept.
The horse is never depicted literally within the interior. Instead, 4SPACE deliberately avoids conventional equestrian motifs and decorative representations, choosing to explore the animal through its abstract physical qualities — its anatomy, muscular strength, skeletal structure, fluidity and movement.
These physiological characteristics are translated directly into the architecture through fluid transitions, curved structural forms and sweeping spatial gestures.
The result is an interior that appears to move with its occupants, creating a sense of dynamic momentum that naturally guides guests through the restaurant.
Rabdan and the Palette of Heritage: A Legacy Translated into Colour
For material and interior-design audiences, Falwa presents a compelling exploration of how heritage can be communicated through colour rather than symbolism.
The spatial palette is anchored by the story of Rabdan, a name deeply intertwined with regional history. Through rich crimson tones and warm, tactile materials, the design team evokes the powerful presence and distinctive coat associated with this legendary steed.
Monochromatic and tonal variations allow light and shadow to interact across the textured surfaces, creating an effect reminiscent of muscular definition, movement and changing form.
This considered use of colour avoids the conventions of themed-restaurant design. Instead, it creates a sophisticated and immersive atmosphere that feels rooted in history while remaining distinctly contemporary.
Culinary Architecture: Where Modern Emirati Cuisine Meets Progressive Design
From a hospitality and lifestyle perspective, Falwa represents a symbiotic collaboration between culinary and architectural vision.
Chef Faisal Alharmoodi takes the foundations of classic Emirati cuisine and elevates them for a contemporary audience. In parallel, 4SPACE takes a fundamental element of local heritage — the UAE’s relationship with the horse — and interprets it through a modern, globally informed design language.
The architecture therefore becomes a physical extension of the culinary philosophy.
