MEI, the newly opened contemporary Asian restaurant and bar at Jumeirah Mina A’Salam, brings together Chinese and Japanese influences in a sculptural, design-led space by acclaimed studio 4SPACE. Created for SHI Hospitality Group, the venue fuses cultural symbolism with modern architectural expression, instantly positioning itself as one of Dubai’s most compelling new design destinations.

Introduction / Overview
Set along the serene waterfront of Mina A’Salam, MEI has quickly established itself as more than a dining venue—it is a crafted journey where architecture, culture, and atmosphere converge. 4SPACE shaped the interior as a seamless interplay of materials, light, and narrative cues, blending East Asian references with contemporary finesse. Every design gesture contributes to an immersive experience where heritage meets modernity and visual storytelling elevates the ritual of dining.

Concept Narrative
Named Měi (“beautiful’’ in Mandarin), the concept celebrates duality in both form and experience. Chinese influences appear in the pitched-roof silhouette hovering above the central bar—a considered nod to pagodas and temple architecture—while Japanese cues are found in the origami-like folds, clean geometry, and Zen-like restraint woven throughout the space. Crane-inspired motifs, symbolic of grace and longevity, subtly animate the ceiling and artwork. “MEI is about duality,” says SHI founder Diana Rysbaeva. “A space that evolves throughout the day, balancing tradition with contemporary energy.”

Spatial Experience
The venue’s atmosphere transforms fluidly from day to night. During daylight hours, soft sunbeams filter through timber lattice screens, enlivening the pale wood tones and creating an uplifting, serene dining environment. After sunset, lighting deepens and shadows lengthen, drawing out the richness of murals, carved surfaces, and sculptural volumes. By 10 PM, MEI transitions into a sophisticated nightlife setting—pivot doors reorient the lounge, music intensifies with live performances and DJ sets, and the bar becomes the glowing centrepiece of the room. The design’s fluidity makes each visit distinct, encouraging guests to experience the venue’s evolving moods.

Architectural Statement
At the heart of the interior is MEI’s signature architectural gesture: a sculptural central bar pavilion crowned by a dramatic pitched wooden roof. This striking volume anchors the space while offering a contemporary reinterpretation of classic East Asian silhouettes. Vertical timber screens shape circulation and create moments of intimacy, while maintaining visual rhythm and openness. Above, an origami-inspired ceiling installation unfolds across the room in faceted planes that catch the light, creating a dynamic interplay of shadow and movement. “We treated MEI as a living artwork,” says Firas Alsahin of 4SPACE. “Each detail was designed to provoke curiosity and connect guests to the cultural narrative.”

Material Palette
A refined material palette reinforces the venue’s dual inspiration. Pale timber forms the architectural base, lending softness and calm reminiscent of Japanese interiors. Muted vermilion accents reference Chinese heritage architecture, offering discreet yet powerful contrast. Brushed brass elements—seen in furniture trims, bespoke lighting, and subtle detailing—add sophistication and a warm glow. Textural depth is introduced through hand-finished murals, layered fabrics, and upholstery in charcoal, jade, and ink blue, drawing from East Asian ceramics and textiles. The palette is cohesive, expressive, and intentionally understated, allowing the architecture and symbolism to take the lead.
Craft and Execution
MEI’s sculptural clarity is matched by its rigorous craftsmanship. The bar’s floating roof structure was custom-built and assembled on-site with exceptional precision, while each CNC-cut origami ceiling panel was individually positioned to maintain exact alignment. Timber screens were crafted with meticulous attention to joinery and rhythm, forming a continuous visual cadence throughout the venue. Materials and finishes were selected for durability and longevity, supporting the demands of a vibrant day-to-night restaurant and lounge. The result is an interior where thoughtful design, cultural storytelling, and technical execution meet seamlessly.
